Odyssey of the Mind

The Odyssey of the Mind is an international “creative problem solving competition.”  During the school day, kids need to learn facts such as 5+5=10.  Odyssey, and NASA, a key sponsor for 11 years now, say, “But, in the real world problems are more like ‘we need 10, how should we get it?’”  Odyssey teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve those problems.

Statement from SBISD Superintendent of Schools, Duncan Klussman (October of 2012):  “Odyssey of the Mind provides students the opportunity to develop a myriad of skills important for student success well beyond the classroom. Creative thinking skills are chief among these. To be successful in any endeavor, a person needs to be able to generate creative solutions to problems they encounter. In Odyssey of the Mind, students learn how to be a contributing member of a team, to analyze problems and performance, to generate and evaluate ideas, and to communicate clearly with one another and an audience. SBISD has a long history of participation and success in Odyssey of the Mind and we encourage students and parents to continue to participate in this creative problem-solving competition.”
